DAB In Crisis

Senior Broadcasters are involved in urgent talks to discuss the dire state of DAB in the UK, In the last year DAB has lost the support of Gcap Media now Global Radio meaning Core, Life and theJazz have closed with Planet Rock and The Arrow in serious doubt. BFBS and Primetime are also victims of a platform suffering huge costs, few listeners and poor audio quality.

Two radical ideas have been proposed. either convince the BBC to slowly go DAB only over an 'unspecified period of time'. Or Spent a fortune of public money to support a massive advertising campaign as well as subsidies for low income users

RG Says: This is a laughable idea that will fail with the current MP2 codec system providing at best barely adequate audio and at worst phone quality. If this is to succeed DAB+ using the AAC Codec should be used. This means that a 64k AAC station will have the audio quality of 192k MP3
